Dr. Edmund Converse Peirce II, M.D., cardiovascular surgeon and scientist died peacefully at his home on Hancock Point, Friday, Aug. 8, 2003. Born Oct. 9, 1917, in Montclair, N.J., the son of Dr. Ethel Girdwood Peirce, M.D., and Dr. George Peirce, M.D., Ph.D.

Throughout his life, Converse was a corner stone for his family. A devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and respected mentor to his many graduate students.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Esther Mumford Peirce; and his eight children, Marjorie Peirce of Sullivan, Col. Carey Gardner Mumford of Dayton, Ohio, Edmund Converse Peirce III of Amesbury, Mass., Leslie Catherine Wilson of Windale, N.Y., Dr. James McNeil Mumford, M.D., of New York City, N.Y., Elizabeth Day Peirce of North Kingston, R.I., George Maxwell Mumford of Roslyn Heights, N.Y., and George Edison Peirce of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; his 13 adoring grandchildren; and an abundance of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service is scheduled at the Hancock Point Chapel, Friday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. Reception following at Crocker House Country Inn.
