Theodora “Teddy” McCarthy, beloved mother and wife died June 22, 2004. She was born July 4, 1929, in Rumford, the eldest daughter of Walter F. and Kathryn (Delta) Finethy.

She attended local school and graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1947. She married her high school sweetheart, William T. McCarthy on Aug. 16, 1952. They made their home in Baltimore, Md., as Mr. McCarthy was in the military and stationed there with the Army Field Band. She worked as the head secretary to three supervisors at Westinghouse in the Air Arm Division for three years. They subsequently moved back to Maine where Teddy worked as secretary to Harold “Westie” Westerman and Jim Butterfield, athletic coaches at the University of Maine in Orono. She was a homemaker and stayed home to raise her children, which they greatly appreciated, working only part-time preparing income tax forms at a local tax return office, and in later years, as an educational technician for several years at Ellsworth High School. Teddy loved interior decorating and furnished her home with taste and style. She was an avid downhill skier all her life, and in her youth, made many trips to Mount Washington skiing at Tuckerman’s Ravine. She and her husband were among the first people to ski at Sugarloaf when the original owner, Amos Winter, personally checked them into the ski lift. She also loved to dance to Latin beats including the cha-cha and also the rumba.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Billy; daughters, Andrea and Wendy McCarthy of Ellsworth; her sisters, Beverly Finethy of Rumford and Nancy Ellrich of Englewood, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Heidi Ellrich of Portland and her children, Erin and Tish, David and Pat Ellrich of Manchester, Mass., and Richie Ellrich of North Carolina, Maryann and Paul Pendleton of Portland and their children, Amanda, Nan and Meredith; William and Judy Harrington of Newport, R.I., and their children, Mimi and Kate; her Aunt Keenie and Uncle Ki, Elwin, all of Rumford and many other cousins and friends. She was  predeceased by her son, William T. McCarthy; brother, Walter Finethy, and her sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Bill Harrington.

A funeral service was held June 25, 2004, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with Father Lou Phillips presiding. A committal service was held June 28, 2004, at St. John’s Cemetery, Rumford, with Father Alfred Jacques presiding.
