Sunday was pretty darn cold, if you remember. And we know 69 people who will remember Sunday for a long time. These would be the brave souls who leapt into a hole in the ice on Phillips Lake in Dedham. It was for a good cause — Camp CaPella, which provides a summer camp experience for children and adults with disabilities. That form of fund raising doesn’t happen to be on our bucket list ... but it was fun to watch. Check out our story and pictures on Page 1 and see the video on fenceviewer.com. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. On Tuesday, State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin was in Ellsworth to address the Rotary Club. He talked about the Governor’s efforts to address the shortfall in the DHHS budget and renewed his criticism of the Maine State Housing Authority’s spending priorities. He also took a few questions about his own moment in the spotlight. Page 1 The state agency that oversees health insurance coverage for Maine state employees has rated the state’s hospitals. MDI Hospital gained “preferred” status. Maine Coast Memorial, Blue Hill Memorial and the Down East Hospital remain on Tier 2. Let us tell you how it works. Page 1. We have the latest on the proposal to start an oyster farm in Surry, the movement to withdraw from Regional School Unit 24, Bucksport’s town manager search, a couple of confounding houses in Blue Hill, the new manager at Verso and the launching of a cool new boat at Hinckley. Plus photos from the Ellsworth Winter Carnival, the Sumner Alumni Basketball Game, high school swimming, wrestling and basketball, the Rainbow Girls and area Scouts performing good deeds. And our “i resolve” man has dropped 20 pounds in one month. See how it’s done. Page 2. And do stay tuned for next week’s edition when we roll out the 2012 issue of Overview, our annual assessment of Hancock County’s economic climate. It’s a keeper! We know what you’re thinking: “How do they do it, week after week?” We do it for you and that is not only why but how we make The American ... The Ellsworth American ... serving the community since before the invention of ping pong. |
