The October 25th Issue of The American
Written by Stephen Fay, Managing Editor

Lamoine and surrounding towns were rocked Tuesday morning by the news that Leon Tilden, 27, had shot and killed his father and uncle before dawn that day. State police poured into town to take part in the search for the shooter. At 10, Leon encountered state police detectives and was shot by one of them. He died 90 minutes later at Eastern Maine Medical Center. A dark day in Hancock County. Page 1

And firefighters in Penobscot got quite a start when they extinguished a garage fire and went in checking for hot spots. What they found was a hand grenade. Somebody call the Bomb Squad. Page 1.

A Hancock County assistant DA responds to charges brought by the Board of Bar Overseers involving the case of Valdek Filler. Read all about it. Page 1

Remember the glut of shedders last summer that nearly did in the lobster industry? Maybe the reason for the odd abundance was warmer water. Some scientists report that the Gulf Stream moved farther north last fall than ever before ... which might be behind the strange phenomenon.

You DO remember  that Election Day is near, right? For your convenience, we include a 12-page section this week called “Ballot Box.” All the candidates are profiled and given a chance to tell you why they deserve your vote. Take a look and get out and vote!

It’s all in The American ... The Ellsworth American ... on the record since 1851.
