The July 1st Issue of The American.

Written by Stephen Fay; Managing Editor

Why is it that whenever the state legislature, in its wisdom, comes up with a cost-saving plan it ends up costing the towns more? Take the jail consolidation law ... please. It appears the state is saving money by not paying its bills to county jails, including the Hancock County Jail. Our County Sheriff, Bill Clark, would like to see oversight of the jails returned to the counties. Read all about it.

And get this, all you techno-geeks: Don't try using money to buy that new iPhone 4 you've been lusting after. In a startling preview of the world to come, eager buyers at the Ellsworth AT&T store were told on Tuesday that Apple insists on credit or debit cards only. We've all heard the expression: "Your money's no good here." But who ever thought it could come true? To find out what's going on, check out Page 1.

But it's not all gloom and doom. How about something totally nice? Perhaps a story about angels? We fly down to New Haven, Conn., with a woman recovering from a liver transplant. She needs to check in with the surgeon almost weekly and thought she'd have to spend months away from her family in Surry. Enter Angel Flights, where private pilots donate their time and planes to give people in need a lift. It's heartwarming.

And we've got a complete list of Fourth of July observances all over the county (some of them are on the 3rd!), as well as a rundown of who's open and who's closed this weekend.

Plus cops, court, high school honor rolls, business news, the word from the waterfront, town news and a ton of sports. All in this week's Ellsworth American...on newsstands and at stores everywhere.
