The September 2nd Issue of The American
Written by Stephen Fay; Managing Editor

Hot enough for you?

The weather gets more than a mention in this week's Ellsworth American. From the Front Page photo of the frazzled fireman wetting his head after fighting the flames at a Verona Island body shop blaze to a countywide survey of Hurricane watchers, we've got the latest on what's hot, what's not and what's the weather going to be this weekend.

The expression "the devil's in the details" was invented to describe the implementation of the medical marijuana law voters adopted last November. A state panel has to approve applications to both grow and distribute pot. (Didn't that used to be illegal?) On Tuesday, a vendor to fill Downeast pot prescriptions was approved by the state panel. But — whoops! — the successful applicant's application got the numbers wrong and now they're taking a second look at the Man from Whitneyville. Stay tuned.

What's gigantic, rarely mentioned, ever present and about to land on your head? Give up? The pension and health care liability for state retirees and teachers. Four-point-four BILLION buckaroonies. How did we get in this pickle? How do we get out? Check out our investigative story.

All this plus a brilliant Arts section, fall sports, a Food page that's good enough to eat, cops, courts and the sad story of a Bucksport bowling alley that had to call it quits.
